On nature and getting off-the-grid
Naive Notes #2 - sipping Starbucks surrounded by squirrels.
Hello reader,
Wiping the hay fever induced tears from my watering eyes and stuffing my streaming nose with tissue, I’m back with another Naive Notes to brighten your weekend. Let’s dive in.
Thoughts from the forest
I’m currently holidaying in nature. Well, as close to nature as my capitalist brainwashing sensibilities will allow.
A deer, a squirrel and several miscellaneous birds came up to my window this morning and let me live out my Disney Princess fantasy that I am, in fact, at one with nature. The vegetarianism is paying off. They see me as one of their own.
I paid £14 for a Starbucks here which did shake up my off-the-grid delulu. But hey, that’s the price you pay for attempting to cultivate hot girl summer vibes with an iced latte in one hand and an Adanola tote in the other. Capitalism really popped off today.
Nestled within this strange intersection of man-made nature (my view currently = trees, trees, M&S kettle chips, trees, the football on the TV, trees), I’ve been thinking a little bit about a lot of things. So, enjoy this nondescript stream of consciousness, from my brain to yours.
The power of nature
Why do life and work and worries feel so intense until you see a bit of greenery, breathe in some non-polluted air and realise there’s literally so much more to life? Surely that should be obvious by now.
Young and old
As summer rolls around and I start seeing families riding bikes and playing tennis and running around and being together outside, I feel simultaneously very young and very old. Do I relate more to the parents or the kids? Do you?
The best ships are friendships
I’m a better friend in my 20s than my teens. Friendship is so much more precious when you’re not seeing your friends every day at school or at uni. It takes effort, but it’s so worth it. Note to self: check-in with friends more often, make plans more often, leave house more often.
Eating pasta in restaurants is underwhelming
Be honest with me - could you make the pasta dish at home? Probably! So why choose it off the menu? I’m not saying it’s wrong, it’s just rogue. Pizza all day every day, baby. I could never recreate that (though I have tried) without installing a wood fire pizza oven somewhere in my home. Which I don’t have room for. Unless I get rid of my sofa. Now that would be a talking point. Hmmm…
So, those are my notes this week. Something a bit different but hopefully some food for thought for you too. Do you agree in the healing powers of nature? Have you always been aware of the magic of friendship? Are you a ride or die pizza-holic or a let them eat pasta type of person? All good questions that I’d love to hear your thoughts on too.
Speak to you soon,
~ Cesca
Not knowing whether I relate to the parents or kids anymore is so real and jarring 😂
